The key thing that helped me was learning to observe by body's tension when I would get emotionally triggered - eg: nervous, anxious, angry, upset, etc. Each would cause a physical clenching, in my stomach, chest or jaw area. I have noticed others who clench their fists. I would become aware of this, relax it, and temporarily ignore the thoughts in my head. This changed my life.
Apart from this, sleeping and waking up pretty much at the same time every single day, even on the weekends, along with some form of exercise daily for 20-30 mins made a big difference.
I went from someone who was moody and volatile, to being even-minded in most circumstances.
I think one way to slice people at work is: (1) those who work for money in order to pay for their lifestyle(hobbies, family, etc) and (2) Those who seek to define their identity through success in the workplace.
It appears that lately there is less of those who seek to define themselves through work, and care more about their life(and identity) outside of work. For such people, trying to incentivize them through money and career growth will likely not work.
My resolutions are about crafting a daily routine that will have positive longterm outcomes - So, 3 main things:
(1) Workout everyday
(2) Read everyday(50 books for the year goal)
(3) Meditate daily
Would the business case not be - commerce generated during sporting events, multiple businesses nearby the stadium benefiting from increased foot traffic, and so on? Projected over a 10-20 year horizon, the city would likely make back its money and then some, while increasing income for businesses in the vicinity.
This is the frequently-cited theory, but most realistic studies show that it doesn’t really work out that way. I think the reasonable justification is more that having a team is an intangible good for the city, like a museum or a library, where you can’t measure the value in dollars.
The foundational element here is your desire to change your current circumstances for the better.
I highly recommend starting with one basic thing, to begin shifting your life in the direction you want it to go. It could be something really small, like getting up daily at the same time, making your bed and drinking a cup of coffee.
If you can do a bit more, I would then recommend a daily workout. Starting to physically feel stronger improves our abilities and confidence to then go tackle other areas of our life.
Regarding the career development, find online or in-person courses in the field which you studied or were employed in, to refresh your memory and skills. Then go seek out companies which are cash strapped, and will bring you on for little compensation. It would be a foot in the door, and you can switch jobs as your skills develop into competence that warrants better paying jobs.
What you are seeking is not difficult, or unreasonable. You can absolutely achieve them. I wish you the best.
A desire arises in one's mind, prompting us to act upon it. Why such desires arise are due to a multitude of reasons - cultural conditioning, advertising, etc. When such a desire arises, we "want" to fulfill it. So from this perspective, there is little free-will in what we can "want".
Through meditation, when there is the ability developed to detach from the thoughts that arise in one's mind, one can choose to not act on desires that urge action. So, there is then the possibility of freedom.
When asked for advice on how to evaluate a job, I usually suggest looking at these 5 aspects:
(1) Team
(2) Domain the company competes in
(3) Technology used
(4) Commute
(5) Compensation
Most people focus too much on the "name" of the company and/or the compensation, and do not weight the other factors enough and often later regret their choices.
Apart from this, sleeping and waking up pretty much at the same time every single day, even on the weekends, along with some form of exercise daily for 20-30 mins made a big difference.
I went from someone who was moody and volatile, to being even-minded in most circumstances.
Hope this helps.
