I hope this gets resolved soon. Libgen has books you can't get anywhere else. I understand the desire to remove copyrighted works so people don't steal, but it also contains a lot of rare books, academic stuff, and so on.

There is always a tension between gating access to culture and reserving only to the well off and allowing writers to live from what they write. There is also a real tension between allowing the public to own and transform the cultural elements of their time and limiting them to being passive consumers.

The paradox of our time is that we have unprecedented tools to share and transform while at the same time, economic interests pushing for people to stay consumers are stronger than ever.

As far as I'm concerned, I picked my side when middle men and the edition lobby killed Google Books ensuring knowledge would stay locked in academic library and not searchable instead of reaching the masses. Everything which accelerates the destruction of the art establishment and middlemen is a step in the right direction. That's also why I never the world steal for people gettting digital copy of books and I encourage you to do the same.

I just used libgen’s torrent pool to get the MIT supercollider book, which is an old book covering a music programming language extensively. If I wanted to purchase an ebook, I’d need to spend about one hundred dollars. It sure sucks for the broke academics that wrote it, but brother I don’t have any cash either, so the alternative to me pirating is not having the information. It’s either the writer loses or everyone loses, and I have no incentive to lose.
