You know one job that has become largely a bullshit but it affects the entire country. The job of a junior congressman in the US House of Representatives. Just two activities that were told to me by a guy who works for a congressman:
1. They have to spend a LOT of time raising money and they are tired a lot doing things around it. This means just convincing a lot of people what they stand for and what the other guy does not, organizing or going to fundraisers. And its a 2 year term which is so short that time gets eaten up. If senators had this crazyness the average senator could not be practically as old as they are.
2. They also have to tow party lines by letting bills they may not have read or don't know about and spend time getting lobbied about why they should or should not support a bill because some donor funded their campaign.
I was told by someone in govt that lot of what the govt does is subcontracted out and the government action is just a lot of Procurement[1].
But the US govt is of course very important and has done useful things like the Clean Air and Water act or Social Security or Maintaining Public infrastructure we take for granted.
