Writers Guild Says It’s Pushing to Prohibit AI-Generated Works (hollywoodreporter.com)

Hmmm I am not sure the title matches the content of the article. As far as I can tell the WGA is quite open to writers using AI as a helpful writing Tool. What they are trying to limit is studios using AI as a tool to screw over writers.

For example, a studio could use an AI system to generate a short story and then ask the writer to adapt that, which significantly impacts the credits and renumeration the writer would receive for doing the entire writing process.

> use an AI system to generate a short story and then ask the writer to adapt that

so how is this any different than asking someone to write a short story before asking someone else to adapt that? Why is having an AI in the loop any different?

2 reasons:

A Guild member isn't getting the primary writing credit. One of a guild's primary purposes is to protect their workers' jobs and compensation.

But it's also in the Guild's own self interest, since an AI doesn't pay 1.5% gross income in Writers Guild dues.

Rules for thee but not for me

For years there were jokes about hollywood generating sludge movies using computers, and now that it's the case, I don't doubt that it'll actually happen. Although it'll be slightly changed to a more human style, I don't doubt we'll start seeing some uncanny similarities in plot arcs for new movies.

> I don't doubt we'll start seeing some uncanny similarities in plot arcs for new movies

Wait… we don’t already?

good point. Although I figure it'll become even more egregious

I expect many groups are going to step up and demand action to somehow restrict AI from intervening their work this year. But it's too late. AI is already on its way to dominate many different fields.

That sort of fatalistic hype is completely unhelpful. Like another comment is explicitly pointing out, whether AI will be used in any given field may not be under our control but on what terms and to whose benefit still absolutely are.

Giving up or encouraging others to do so just ensures it will be used in the most exploitative and extractive ways possible and in no others.
