Ask HN: How to set up your own VPN for family in Russia

Most of my family is in Russia. Connectivity to twitter/facebook has already been degraded by Russian gov, with full ban being likely in the next weeks. Simultaneously Russian gov has been banning popular VPN providers since 2019[1]. I'm US based, and have been thinking about setting up private VPN to ensure internet access for my family.

Has anyone setup a private VPN service for themselves or for their family lately? What provider and stack have you used? Do you think it was worth it? Any other tips?

kind of a swiss army knife approach https://github.com/StreisandEffect/streisand Streisand sets up a new server running your choice of WireGuard, OpenConnect, OpenSSH, OpenVPN, Shadowsocks, sslh, Stunnel, or a Tor bridge. It also generates custom instructions for all of these services. At the end of the run you are given an HTML file with instructions that can be shared with friends, family members, and fellow activists.

Russia has invaded a sovereign nation under propaganda reasons internally. They are banning VPNs because they can't let the people find out the truth.

If you setup a VPN and your family is caught connecting. They will be considered an enemy.
