'Religion without philosophy is sentiment, or sometimes fanaticism, while philosophy without religion is mental speculation.' - Srila Prabhupada

I’m jealous. Think of all the books being read, vinyl being listened to, board games being played, conversations being had. Things were better before the internet.

I think the issue here is not the books being read but rather the people being shot

To clarify I added ""technically" to the question: My immediate goal is finding a way to reach relatives during this blackout. More importantly, how to build a resilient, long-term communication fail-safe so we aren't cut off when we are connected and the next shutdown happens.

Sure, but that's not exactly the situation in Iran right now.

As previously mentioned, we may be seeing the end of home PC's as we know it: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46511477

There are still absurd amount of computers available on eBay. They are not newest, but you can use them for most of the work and it will force software developers to optimize their programs, because ability to run software on 10-15 year old computer will become a competitive advantage.

Not only that but if you're not trapped in the Microsoft hell of forced hardware updates there's no reason to move on from what you've got now. My desktop PC is from 2007 and, for what I use it for, not noticeably different in operation from what you'd buy now. The only change I made was upgrading to an SSD at some point, apart from that it's the original hardware.

49 years enslaved in a laboratory, forced to learn tricks, likely deprived of food and comfort until she played along. No clue why Jane Goodall embraced such cruelty. Showing how intelligent non-human animals are, then forcing them to endure such inhumane treatment is par the course for 'scientists'.

Should Iran strike America since ICE is killing protestors? Is that how this works?

In 50 years, if the roles are reversed — if Iran has transitioned to liberal democracy; if the US has continued down the path of authoritarianism; if Americans are rising up to regain their freedom — then, yes, hopefully Iran will return the favor, and lend a hand.

I hear estimates of 2000+ dead. When America gets to that point, all help will be accepted.

IF we would ever learn about 2000+ dead ( fake news and all) - they would all be called terrorists. IF...

Haha, down voted. Goes to show who's toes I stepped on. Doesn't mean it's wrong though.

'You are an American citizen. With ONLY the following options, how would you vote in the 2024 US presidential election?'

Only Grok would vote for Trump.

Great analogy. We’re giving this glorified chatbot nonsense they fraudulently call ‘AI’ far too much credit though.

The quality of pizza has noticeably decreased over the years. People would laugh at the idea of Pizza Hut being a delicious, dine-in restaurant. Now it's fast, expensive slop. Keep cutting costs and quality until you go bankrupt.

‘The UK has been warned it could face US sanctions if Sir Keir Starmer attempts to block Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, amid mounting concern over its AI tool generating sexualised images of women and children.’

Print it, frame it, and hang it in a museum. We have fallen so low.

‘with the decision to bring to return the astronaut to Earth.’

I’m seeing more and more mistakes like this in articles this past year. Is proofreading not a thing anymore?

Ars doesn't seem to have any editors. Typos are pretty common and sometimes they get facts pretty badly wrong too.

I don't mind minor mistakes, if the news site corrects them when people inform them.

What is not acceptable is that news sites do not do these corrections.

In the current climate for journalism the subeditor is a dying breed…

I take it as a signal that a human was editing it rather than an LLM.

"Please add one deliberate but minor spelling or grammar mistake to your output".

I did mean one of many signals I use to evaluate if something is LLM generated.

But point taken that I should weight it accordingly.
