put the life saving another way: you get the vaccine, you are more likely to stay out of the hospital, and the bed you would otherwise be occupying can now be used to treat the car accident victim, the heart attack patient, the cancer patient, etc.

the issue for me isn't that a mistake was made, the issue is that the parties responsible for the mistake conspired in secret without official record to cover up their error, and left the man dumped in a homeless shelter with fifty cents.

This happens "all the time". Taking responsibility is not 'in vogue' nowadays. (Prime examples are the lasts president. Obama was big on cracking down on whistleblowers. Orange explicitly claimed many times that managing stuff is not his responsibility, he has people for that.)

Agreed. What happened here is absolutely horrific.

I agree. Whatever YT's disinformation problem is, 100% not going to be helped by striking Osterholm's podcasts and channel off the platform :(

Perfect time to advertise Google's Takeout Services:

https://takeout.google.com/

This service permits the export of (nearly?) all Google services data on both a scheduled and unscheduled on-demand basis.

I have my Google account configure to automatically export all service data every 2 months and upload ZIP files to MS OneDrive. This process completely bypasses me and my local computer. I just have to remember to check that the data transferred to OneDrive as expected.

The only constructive criticism I have of the Takeout Services scheduled process is that the scheduled exports are limited to a one year duration. I have to remember to reconfigure the next year's scheduled exports. Ideally I'd be permitted to set and forget, with a periodic reminder that the export is still happening and a "Good" / "Not Good" confirmation that the process ought continue.

Takeout Services won't restore function and applications, but at least a great part of my data won't be irretrievably lost.

I just learned about Takeout today. The question I still have though is, how do you import those exports back into some usable state/service?

good question, not exactly sure, need to download and look at contents... (queue Jeopardy thinking music) ...

Okay, so my account generates five 2GB zip files. I randomly picked file #4 and unzipped to inspect the contents. The structure of the zip file included the following:

* Google Photos

* Contacts

* Drive

* YouTube and YouTube Music

Interestingly, while the general structure looks okay, the content under the directories is incomplete. I'm not sure why this is. Like for example, "Contacts" has only one person's recently added Contact and only a JPG of an emoji face at that. That definitely isn't a complete data set, and makes me wonder if Takeout Services is not a cumulative back up, rather only a delta.

I downloaded a second file, to see how it was formatted. The second file also had Contacts data. It generally followed the contact groupings I have in place (ex. family, friends, medical, shopping, etc.). It had a smattering of .vcf files with profile pictures for some, but not all, people. YouTube directory had what looked to be a complete download of all videos I've ever uploaded, plus various other historical record of my YouTube activity.

Basically, it looks like recovery of a single service is only possible with a full set of recovery files (in my case, all 5 files). The content of each recovered service depends in great part on the nature of the service. There is a lot of garbage in the back up files for the unused / lightly used services. What's happening with the Contacts is a bit concerning since the the data is split between (apparently) all 5 back up files. Same thing for Drive, and maybe Mail.

Recovery of the data and service would be service by service, and dependent on the type of service, and the data provided in each service type.

This tempest in a teapot is why I am an advocate for RSS. Why do people depend on Twitter or FB for their news? Curate your own news feed with RSS. Read widely, read things that challenge your belief systems, pick quality reporting. If the NY post is your jam spend 2 seconds actually setting up an RSS feed for their site, Reggie their reporting, and click through to read about Hunter Biden.

let's hope those tourists and foreigners read Dutch if and when labels are added to packaging!

I use Google Translate when I browse food somewhere I can’t read the language.

does not recognize a penis drawn with dotted lines, solid line penis is a definite no-go.

ok, but can he read handwritten chinese? if you come away from your memorization process only able to read chinese newspaper fonts, you will have missed the ability to read handwritten notes on a whiteboard, the artistic renderings on product packages, the ancient forms of characters in artistic objects.

isn't most text you'll see nowadays going to be printed and standardized? I can't remember the last time I read a handwritten anything, aside from my own notes.

Yes, but do you not have a whiteboard in your workplace? anything an actual chinese person writes on that will be in a personalized cursive. Normal cityscapes will be filled with italicized, cursive, traditional, simplified, archaic forms. Merely learning to read newspaper and computer fonts is great for reading a newspaper or computer screen. Not so great for a fully functional life.

I lived in Asia for 15 years, speak, read, and write JP/Ch-Trad/Ch-Simp and I still struggle with handwriting and cursive. At this point, I've resigned my self to a lifelong hobby to improve.

yeah, i read about that requirement. there is a way to interrogate skype's windows desktop client install to extract the account creation date. even squirreled away a support link about how to do this which of course is now broken.

Edit: new link here

May not affect you, but rather your son at some point in his life.

My mom had a weird case were the Patriot Act's requirements for name construction "broke" the legal name she used for herself (firstname givenmiddlename husbandlastname) on everything. Her driver license was renewed about 8 years ago, and suddenly her DL name was firstname misspelledmaidenlastname husbandlastname. Suddenly her DL didn't match any of her official documentation like her passport, marriage license, and I think all social security / medicare IDs and documentation, plus bank accounts, property records, and on and on.

She couldn't use the DL to change her name with all of the impacted person records because the maiden name used by the DMV was misspelled. Example of the error, DL maiden name was Jordan, but her actual maiden name was Jorden. She challenged the DMV, they pulled up her birth certificate only to find that there was a typo on the birth cert dating back to the 40s. Nobody in all that time caught the typo.

In order to have the birth cert corrected she had to go back to the state she was born in and request a fix. They required out of a list of things, 2 or 3 (can't exactly remember) forms of proof of error. She found one proof easily, but not anything additional. Spent months trying to find anything else that proved she went by Jorden as an unmarried woman. Finally found that my brother's birth certificate required her maiden name and on that she had spelled her maiden name as Jorden. My birth cert issued from a different state did not have her maiden name.

At that point, she was able to apply for a correction with secretary of state, apply for a new DL / passport. Then spent another 1-2 years fixing all SS/medicare, bank, insurance, credit card, property records...

This all happened after her parents had died, and iirc one of the forms of proof she could provide was a birth parent attestation of error. Obviously dead men tell no tales.
