What I’d really like is to run the admin interface for an app on a self hosted system behind firewalls, and push read replicas out into the cloud. But I haven’t seen a database where the master pushes data to the replicas instead of the replicas contacting the master. Which creates some pretty substantial tunneling problems that I don’t really want on my home network.
Is there a replica implementation that works in the direction I want?
This is talk about how the OS uses that RAM to make your software better.
But to that point, having to explain to people why this 32GB machine with two processes using 10GB each can not, in fact, fit another 10GB process because the response times of the two existing processes relies heavily on that “unused” memory that is actually part of the working set of the machine. And also occasionally one of those services spikes to 14GB so what happens when that happens?
So in that regard showing that memory as used has advantages for avoiding arguments with people who are not equipped to have their half of the argument in a useful and meaningful way.
I’ve had to explain too many times to people who should know better that “rss” is not how much memory a process needs but how much the operating system allows it to have. Put other stuff on the machine and that number will go down. No it’s not that improvement you think you made to that data structure. If you want that, look at total memory or heap size after GC if it’s a garbage collected language.
Someone once said the reason we had alcohol before civilization is that we carry around a chemical testing laboratory in our faces.
It just so happens that everything in beer that can go wrong and hurt you (any sooner than cancer) creates a distinct aftertaste and you can learn to avoid it rather easily.
The only exception of course is if you use poisonous ingredients in the first place.
Supposedly Jell-O was originally to be clear but they needed the food coloring to convince your brain you weren’t just tasting sugar and citric acid instead of the little bit of flavor they added per recipe.
It might suffice to just make it look like you’re European to keep their goons from harassing you, which hasn’t happened yet but will, because that’s how these stories always end. Get a PO Box for a credit card and VPN in through Europe.
I think one might argue even a VPN might be enough. Theoretically someone might be European and can have American card or any other countries cards and it would generally be okay.
So the only thing you kind of need to figure out is VPN and ProtonVPN provides free vpn service which does include EU servers access as well
I wonder if Claude Code or these AI services block VPN access though.
If they do, ehh, just buy a EU cheap vps (hetzner my beloved) and call it a day plus you also get a free dev box which can also run your code 24x7 and other factors too.
Former NCSA employee here. The fuck they did. Netscape caught us out time and again for accepting SGML garbage that we didn’t handle properly. It’s a big part of why Netscape won that round of the browser wars. Such recovery then wound up in tools that generated web pages for you and it was all over but the crying. JavaScript was just the last straw. Which I tried to talk them into adopting but got no traction.
I was there, Gandalf. I was there 30 years ago. I was there when the strength of men failed.
Netscape started this. NCSA was in favor of XML style rules over SGML, but Netscape embraced SGML leniency fully and several tools of that era generated web pages that only rendered properly in Netscape. So people voted with their feet and went to the panderers. If I had a dollar for every time someone told me, “well it works in Netscape” I’d be retired by now.
