My two kids absolutely do not trust open social media (thankfully). My 16 year old has a IMessage group with his friends as well as a discord and that’s it. My 13 year old just uses iMessage with his friend group. My wife and I have taught them the risks of social media but never to the degree of their current distrust. They seem to have picked it ip on their own and want no part of X, insta, TikTok or anything else. They just want to talk to the friends they know.

It’s shocking the collective shrug I get from our security people at work. I attend pretty serious meetings about genAI implementations and when I ask about points of view around security given things as crazy as “adversarial poetry” is a real thing I just get shrugs. I get the feeling they don’t want to be the ones to say “no, don’t bring genai to our clients” but also won’t dare say “yes, our client’s data is safe with integrated genai”.

To me, as just another kinda old (I’m 49) swe, the biggest benefit of using an LLM tool is it saves a shit ton of typing. I know what I want and I know when it’s right, just saving me from typing it all out is worth $20 bucks a month.

I have to admit, LLMs do save a lot of typing a d associated syntax errors. If you know what you want and can spot and fix mistakes made by the LLM then they can be pretty useful. I don’t think it’s wise to use them for development if you are not knowledgeable enough in the domain and language to recognize errors or dead ends in the generated code though.

> late-stage-capitalist hellscape

Isn’t this the most prosperous, peaceful, and just period in history like ever? What “hellscape”?

To be fair most actual engineers just copy paste from a previous project (MEP engineers in architecture) or just look up numbers or equipment in a table (every structural engineer I’ve known). A vanishingly small percentage of any engineer (software or otherwise) are actually doing what most people think as “engineering”.

this type of comment will get you downvoted here faaaast… ;) bunch of “engineers” here engineering and shit

My very gaming experienced and data oriented 13 year old wants to switch from Nvidia to AMD. I don’t understand all his reasons/numbers but I suppose that’s as good an endorsement as any for AMDs GPUs.

I agree, if we’re going have universal surveillance then the data must be universally accessible.

Just fyi, you can put whatever you want in /etc/hosts, it gets hit before the resolver. So you can run your website on localhost with your regular host name over https.

I’m aware, I just picked one example but there are others like instead of a mail server you’re using console, or you have a CDN.

you're right it's not continuous, you'd have to send another ping once the first one is finished. Your data is only "stored in the network" until the ping completes which would be a few hundred ms or so and then another ping has to be sent. If a single ping fails i wonder if the whole "fs" is corrupted or if there some kind of error handling built in.

Clearly you need to send multiple redundant PINGs. ICMP delay line memory RAID.
